Health screening in Korea: what it costs and what is in it

Why comprehensive screening packages have no published price, what the individual components cost, and how to estimate a package before you book.

7 min read

The comprehensive health check-up is probably Korea’s best-known medical export. Large hospitals run dedicated screening centres, a full package takes half a day to two days, and the results come back faster than most health systems manage in a month.

It is also the one thing on this site with no published package price, and it is worth understanding why before you start comparing quotes.

What you can price: the components

What is published is most of what goes into a package. If you know roughly what a hospital is proposing to include, you can build a defensible estimate and, more usefully, judge whether a quoted package is reasonable for what it contains.

Sedated endoscopy is the item to understand

Gastroscopy and colonoscopy are the core of a Korean screening package, and almost everyone opts for sedation. The endoscopy procedure itself is largely insurance-covered for residents; what is billed separately, and what appears in the disclosure, is the sedation management fee.

For a visiting patient who is not in the national insurance system, the endoscopy itself is also self-paid, so your bill will be higher than these lines alone. The sedation fee is still a useful anchor: it tells you which hospitals price the sedated experience modestly and which do not.

How to read a package quote

Ask for the itemised contents rather than a headline figure, then check three things:

  • Is imaging included, and which? A package with a brain MRI is a fundamentally different product from one with ultrasound only, and the price gap between them should be roughly the gap in the tables above.
  • Is endoscopy sedated? Unsedated is cheaper and unpleasant. Confirm which you are being quoted.
  • Is a consultation included? A screening that hands you numbers without a doctor explaining them is worth much less, particularly if you are leaving the country days later.

A screening produces findings you may need to act on at home. Two documented fees matter more than their size suggests:

Request the English report and the imaging disc at the hospital, before you fly. A Korean screening report that your own doctor cannot read is a report you paid for twice. The medical certificate guide covers exactly what to ask for.

Which hospitals run screening centres

Dedicated screening centres are concentrated in tertiary and large general hospitals — the same institutions that dominate this dataset. The hospital index lists them by region, and each hospital page shows every price that institution publishes, each compared to its local median.

That is the practical use of this site for screening: you cannot compare packages directly, but you can see whether a hospital prices its individual components above or below the market. A hospital that is 30% above median on every component is unlikely to be competitive on the bundle.

Figures on this page are read from the published disclosure data at build time, so they match the price pages exactly. This is general information about published prices, not medical advice, and it does not recommend any hospital. Confirm any figure with the hospital before treatment.
