Why Korean plastic surgery prices are not published

Cosmetic surgery happens at clinic-level practices, which fall outside Korea's price disclosure. What that means, and how to protect yourself when no public benchmark exists.

Korea is the country most associated with cosmetic surgery, so it is reasonable to assume its prices must be the easiest to find. They are the hardest, and the reason is structural rather than secretive.

Why the tier matters

Korean medical institutions are tiered by size and capability. Hospitals — which includes tertiary hospitals, general hospitals, and specialist hospitals — must disclose what they charge for treatment insurance does not cover. Clinics, the smaller practices below that threshold, do not.

Nearly every well-known cosmetic practice in Gangnam is a clinic. So the disclosure that makes Korean dental and imaging prices transparent simply does not reach the sector people most want transparency in. The guide to hospital types explains the tiers in more detail.

What this site can and cannot price

We can price cosmetic-adjacent procedures where hospitals do them. Coverage is real but thin, and skewed toward hospitals rather than the clinics most patients actually visit:

LASIK

$1,580

LASEK
₩1,500,000

₩2,530,000
$1,820
71
Trifocal IOL (PanOptix)
₩2,238,500
$1,610

Note the hospital counts. Where only a handful of institutions disclose, that figure describes those institutions, not a national going rate — which is why no benchmark badge appears on pages with too few disclosures.

For facial and body cosmetic surgery, we have nothing, and we would rather say so than publish an estimate dressed up as data.

How to protect yourself where no benchmark exists

Price opacity is exactly the condition in which aggressive selling works. A few things reduce your exposure:

  • Get the quote in writing, itemised, before you travel. Anaesthesia, facility fees, implants and follow-up should each be a line. A single number is not a quote.
  • Ask what happens if there is a complication — who treats it, where, and who pays. A clinic without a clear answer is telling you something.
  • Ask which specific doctor operates. Confirm it in writing. This is the single most-reported complaint from foreign patients about Korean cosmetic clinics.
  • Be sceptical of quotes that change after arrival. A price revised upward during an in-person consultation, under time pressure, is a pattern rather than a coincidence.
  • Check the institution is registered to treat foreign patients. Korea maintains a registry for this, and treatment at an unregistered practice removes protections you would otherwise have.

What a published benchmark is worth

If you are also having dental work, imaging, or a health screening on the same trip, those are covered by the disclosure and you can check them precisely. It is worth using that where it exists:

The honest summary

For cosmetic surgery in Korea, the public data does not exist, and no amount of presentation changes that. Treat any site quoting confident plastic surgery price ranges as marketing, compare written quotes from several clinics directly, and weight surgeon credentials and complication policy above the number.

The methodology page documents exactly which institution types are in this dataset and how we verified the gap.

Figures on this page are read from the published disclosure data at build time, so they match the price pages exactly. This is general information about published prices, not medical advice, and it does not recommend any hospital. Confirm any figure with the hospital before treatment.
