Robotic surgery in Korea: what da Vinci procedures cost
Robot-assisted thyroid and prostate surgery is priced separately from the hospital stay. What the published figure covers and what it leaves out.
5 min read
Korea adopted surgical robotics early and heavily, and robot-assisted procedures at Korean tertiary hospitals are a genuine draw for patients from countries where the same operation is either unavailable or priced out of reach. Two of those procedures have published prices.
| Procedure | Median | Range | Hospitals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robotic thyroid cancer surgery | ₩8,000,000 $5,760 | ₩1,000,000 – ₩16,000,000 | 84 |
| Robotic radical prostatectomy | ₩8,370,000 $6,020 | ₩4,000,000 – ₩13,000,000 | 82 |
What the figure covers
The disclosed price is the robotic surgery fee, including the consumables the robot uses. Those instruments are a significant part of why robot-assisted surgery costs more than the conventional approach, and bundling them into one line is helpful.
What it does not cover:
- The hospital stay. Robotic surgery generally means a shorter admission than open surgery, but it is still several nights. See the room cost guide.
- Anaesthesia.
- Pre-operative work-up — imaging, biopsies, and consultations, which for a cancer diagnosis can be extensive.
- Pathology on tissue removed during the operation.
- Follow-up, including any ongoing treatment the pathology leads to.
Why coverage is thin
Only a limited number of hospitals disclose these lines, because surgical robots are concentrated in tertiary and large general hospitals. Where fewer than three institutions in a region disclose a price, this site shows no regional benchmark — a median over two hospitals describes those hospitals, not a market.
Read these medians as the going rate at the institutions that do this work, which is arguably the more useful figure anyway. You would not be choosing between all Korean hospitals for robotic cancer surgery; you would be choosing between the few that perform it.
Volume matters more than price here
For complex surgery, procedure volume at an institution is widely regarded as relevant to outcomes. This dataset contains no outcome or volume information whatsoever, and cannot help you assess it.
That is a real limit on what a price comparison is worth for this category. Use the figures to understand the financial scale and to check that a quote is not an outlier — not to choose a surgeon.
Budgeting the whole episode
A realistic estimate for robotic cancer surgery in Korea is the disclosed surgical fee plus imaging, plus several nights of accommodation, plus documentation:
| Procedure | Median | Range | Hospitals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robotic radical prostatectomy | ₩8,370,000 $6,020 | ₩4,000,000 – ₩13,000,000 | 82 |
| Brain MRI | ₩450,000 $320 | ₩175,565 – ₩1,045,000 | 874 |
| Private room, single occupancyper night | ₩150,000 $110 | ₩5,000 – ₩550,000 | 2365 |
| English-language medical certificate | ₩20,000 $14 | ₩5,000 – ₩50,000 | 2049 |
The only reliable number is a written, itemised quote from the hospital treating you. This page tells you whether that quote sits inside the published range.
Full distributions and the hospitals behind them are on the robotic surgery page.
Figures on this page are read from the published disclosure data at build time, so they match the price pages exactly. This is general information about published prices, not medical advice, and it does not recommend any hospital. Confirm any figure with the hospital before treatment.
